About the Book
Dave was a Northwest river legend whose roots were in the McKenzie River Valley. The book is the posthumous publication of Dave’s life and tales. It is a treasure chest of stories about his early years, wilderness characters he knew, guides he hired, tragedies he observed, hilarious moments, backcountry flying, marksmanship, horse packing, a love story, and the pioneering Helfrich family values he represented.
With help from author Roger Fletcher, and Dave’s life partner, Terry Sambrailo, Dave’s treasured stories were recorded, transcribed and mildly edited to retain David’s unique speaking style. Family, river guides and friends have contributed their insights, and the book contains an abundance of complementary images.

His Life, His Times, and His Tales as told to family and friends. “Around the Campfire with David Prince Helfrich”, is set to be released on Saturday, April 28 at the McKenzie River Drift Boat Festival from 10 AM – 4 PM at Eagle Rock Lodge.
Eagle Rock Lodge is located on the McKenzie at milepost 35, just upriver from Silver Creek landing. Several of his immediate family and friends will be at the Wooden Boat Festival for conversation and reminiscences.
